RYA Dayskipper Practical Course

Become a skilled yacht skipper in familiar waters by day and enjoy a little holiday at the same time

Description: This Course is designed to teach you to ’take charge’ safely and confidently. Skippers are responsible for the complete safety and wellbeing of the yacht and crew. These responsibilities include weather forecasting, vicutalling, engine maintenance, sail selection and handling, passage planning, watch keeping, navigation and pilotage. For aspiring skippers who already have some yachting experience, know the basics of navigation and have sailing ability. During the course you will be asked to skipper the yacht on short passages. The instructor will be on hand to give advice and encouragement and to ensure that your destination is reached safely. The essential element is that you experience being in charge.

Suggested minimum pre-course experience and recommended knowledge: Sailing ability; 5 days, 100 miles, 4 night hours at sea; Basic navigation knowledge. It is recommended that you complete the Day Skipper shorebased course before attending this practical course. Knowledge of all aspects of the RYA competent crew syllabus

Course contents: Practical navigation and pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and basic skippering techniques enabling you to skipper a boat in local waters in daylight.

Example schedule

Duration: 5 days or three weekends.

After the course: You are able to skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day.

Certificate: After successful completion we award you with a RYA Dayskipper Practical Certificate.
